Designs By Richard and Jared Chavez

DESIGN, PRECISION, & INNOVATION

These are just some of the aspects that come into consideration with every work we create. From the initial concept of every piece, the materials we choose, to use to the placement of every stone, and of course, down to the comfort and wearability of the design itself; There is an intent for every decision made in all that we create, and no aspect of the design is left as a second thought. Every piece created within Chavez Studio by Richard and Jared is truly a work of art with both collectors and admirers alike.

Who We Are

Who We Are

Richard I Chavez

Jeweler/Lapirdary Artist

Richard Chavez was born and raised in San Felipe Pueblo, one of the more conservative and traditional Pueblos of New Mexico. San Felipe Pueblo holds the distinction of being one of the only Pueblos alongside the Rio Grande River.

In the early 70’s, Richard worked as an architectural draftsman for Harvey S. Hoshour, A.I.A. Mr. Hoshour came to Albuquerque, New Mexico after working for the Bauhaus Architect, Mies Van De Rohe. The Bauhaus philosophy emphasized the principles of purity, sparseness, and balance that later influenced the designs by which Richard’s jewelry would become known.

The Studio

Established 1976

Before The Studio was established Richard began his career in the kitchen of his family home. There he and his wife would cut drill and polish heishi beads to be later strung. After some time Richard decided he needed a dedicated workspace to house his growing career. So with that in mind, he began the process of designing and constructing the very building which houses the talents of both Richard and Jared to this very day.

While many people don't see the studio in the midst of the chaos that ensues for show's preparation, it's truly a living, working environment.  One which continues to inspire the  work and design processes for the jeweler duo.

Jared J Chavez

Jeweler/Photographer/
Printmaker/Videographer

When I was ten years old I wandered into my father's studio one summer day and complained of having nothing to do. My father told me he would teach me how to make jewelry, but only if I put all of my effort into the process. He taught me the necessary skills of sawing, filing, soldering, and polishing, and left the design process to me. I understood that he was known for his lapidary work, and I felt that I should do the same, but instead of teaching me the process of stone polishing he gave me a set of stamps, hammers, and files to experiment with. It was then that I took these tools that would help me develop the overall style.

Designs That Move You

While you can fall in love with a design at first sight, you can also fall in love with the story behind the piece. Everything that Richard and Jared create is the result of hours of work behind the bench. (to view the film in full screen click the "expand button on the lower right

One of Richard and Jared's most recent collaborations in "The Coral Legacy" project, this magnificent necklace was the product of weeks of planning and fabrication. Its elegance in design and style makes itself at home wherever one chooses to make an appearance.

The first in a series of work by Richard I Chavez utilizing a truly unique piece of material. Once belonging to the great contemporary Native American jeweler Charles Loloma, this monumental piece of coral was passed on to Richard by Gene Waddell of the Waddell Trading Company as part of a multi-year project with the gallery.

The signature texturing style of Jared's texturing design and fabrication process is an exercise of stream of conscious thought. "Every design starts with a curved line and from there the concept begins to evolve with every hammer and stamp strike."

A Studio, A Home

Located along the picturesque Rio Grande River in San Felipe Pueblo, New Mexico, Chavez Studio stands alongside the Chavez Family Home. It is here that Richard Chavez began to build a legacy for his family that would continue to grow and evolve along with his own growing family.

Richard I. Chavez never sought recognition for his work when starting his career as a lapidary artist in 1976. His thoughts were first and foremost of making a better life for his family. Yet in the years since, Richard would become known for his craft and his work would be highly sought after. In 2006, Richard’s son Jared would officially join him in the business, creating Chavez Studio.

Richard's Evolution

As a draftsman, Richard would be exposed to design elements and philosophies of the Bauhaus moment. These tenants would provide him the ability to practice restraint and exacting craftsmanship in all the work he created, would create, and has become known for.

As time progressed and Richard's work continued to evolve and he would eventually leave his position as a draftsman to pursue his lifelong career as a Jeweler.

To this day, Richard continues to hold true to the Mies Van Der Rohe creed of "less is more" as well as continuing to pursue the evolution and refinement of his craft.

Raised In The Studio

Throughout the years the Studio has served as an extension of the Chavez family home. While it primarily served as Richard's workspace, his wife Sharon, their two daughters Cynthia and Alissa, and of course their son Jared would all make their mark on the studio's walls both figuratively and literally through designs in pottery and jewelry.

As the years have progressed, more equipment has been added, and long since Jared has made his own space within The Studio, space has grown "cozier" over the years. Yet it's this very environment which continues to inspire both Richard and Jared as they evolve as artists and designers.

The Legacy

Who knew that Jared's initial foray into the studio one summer at the age of ten began a lifelong journey into the world of art?

He complained to his father of not having anything to do, and was told:

I can teach you how to make jewelry, but only if you put all your effort behind it.

With those words in mind Jared would begin his lifelong journey in developing the craft which his father taught him. Eventually along this path, both Richard and Jared would continue to evolve the lifeline of Chavez Studio.
